How To Buy Bulk Mulch

When you work in a garden or in landscaping, there is a good chance that you place a lot of orders for bulk mulch. Bulk mulch orders are a great way to save on the overall cost of doing business, but when you do this there are some inventory and cost issues that you must think about.
First, bulk mulch orders mean that you are going to get a lot of something that has limited use. You will want to use the mulch as much as you can, and there is not much of a market for reselling your mulch if you have a lot of it on your hands but not enough work to use it all. It is possible to sell it to individuals who only want a small order of mulch, but your bulk mulch order should not rely on this reselling.
Rather, you should plan to place a bulk mulch order when you have several jobs that will make use of that mulch almost as soon as it gets delivered. Think of it as cost control. You would not want to stock up on mulch that just sits in a shed or on a truck waiting to be used. Rather than have to pay for space where you keep the mulch until you have a job to use it on, you want to first find a job, set it up and then take your mulch to the site where it will be spread.
Once you have a few jobs lined up, you should place a bulk mulch order that will guarantee you have enough mulch for the job. This will save you a lot in the total cost of holding a mulch inventory, and it will make it easier to set up a regular flow of bulk mulch orders. There is always a chance that you will have a little bit less or more than the exact amount you need. For this reason, it is better to place the order that will keep you a bit over the needed amount. This way, you might have to hang on to some extra mulch for a future job, but it is less costly than running out of mulch and then having to order more. That may cost you a client as you wait for more mulch to arrive, especially when the waiting pushes you past the deadline for that job.
